11 Disney anniversaries to commemorate in August
Film, ride, resort and cruise ship debuts are just some of the Disney anniversaries taking place this August.
We not only get to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp,” but also the 91st anniversary of the premiere of “The Skeleton Dance,” the first Silly Symphony.
We not only commemorate the ninth anniversary of the new Aulani resort in Hawaii, but the 11th anniversary of Bay Lake Tower.
Here’s a look at all the major Disney anniversaries taking place:
AUGUST
August 3, 1990 – “DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp” premieres. (30th anniversary) Scrooge McDuck travels to the Middle East to inspect a recently discovered treasure chest he is certain contains the treasure of the great thief Collie Baba. This was the first Disney a Disney animated film was not produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. It was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation under the banner of Disney MovieToons and animated by Walt Disney Animation France S.A.
August 4, 2009 – Bay Lake Tower opens at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. This Disney Vacation Cub property was built on the land formerly occupied by a garden wing of the original A-frame Contemporary Tower.
August 9, 1969 – The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland opens. The mansion overlooking the Rivers of America is home to the most “spirited” attraction in New Orleans Square. A steady stream of “Doom Buggies” carries guests on a tour of the Haunted Mansion, which is inhabited by a lively collection of 999 happy haunts and filled with special effects, haunting show sets and ethereal music.
August 15, 1999 – Maiden voyage of the Disney Wonder takes place. This is the second ship to join the Disney fleet.
August 15, 2015 – Star Wars expansion plans announced for Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios are made by The Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger at D23EXPO 2015.
August 16, 1955 – Dumbo the Flying Elephant opens at Disneyland. (65th anniversary). The ride opened a month after the park originally opened, even though it was scheduled to open with the rest of the park but was delayed because of flawed prototypes.
August 17, 2007 – “High School Musical 2” set records on its debut on Disney Channel becoming the most successful Disney Channel Original Movi ever produced.
August 22, 1929- “The Skeleton Dance,” the first Silly Symphony was produced and directed by Walt Disney and animated by Ub Iwerks.
August 25, 1989- Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Disney world.
August 29, 2011- Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa opens in west Oahu’s Ko Olina Resort & Marina in Hawaii. This is the third standalone hotel that is not connected to any theme park. Walt Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde has said the word aulani “expresses a connection to tradition and deep story-telling.” Rohde also noted that aulani, translated from Hawaiian to English means, “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “the place that speaks with deep messages.”
August 29, 1999 – Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World opens.
