A look at the Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle 2005 makeover

When the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic on March 16 Cinderella Castle was in the middle of a makeover. The castle is being repainted in preparation for Disney World’s 50th anniversary.

But this wasn’t the first time the castle had been given a new color scheme or even temporarily redecorated. This included when the castle was turned in a giant cake for the resort’s 25th anniversary and in 2005 for the Disneyland’s 50th anniversary.

On May 5, 2005, the castle was unveiled with polished gold trim and accents, banners, tapestries and golden statues on the castle.

Above the archway was a special magic mirror that changed images every 40 seconds or so featuring Disney castles from around the world and when the castles opened: Disneyland in 1955, the Magic Kingdom in 1971, Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, Disneyland Paris in 1992 and Honk Kong Disneyland in 2005.

Golden statues of Disney animated characters were added to the exterior of the castle, including Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, and Wendy Darling circling the tallest spire.
