Disney closes ‘Frozen’ on Broadway permanently due to the coronavirus

The musical Broadway production of “Frozen” will not reopen when Broadway turns its lights back on post-pandemic, Disney Theatrical Productions announced.

The show, after 825 regular performances, ended its Broadway run when Broadway was shuttered on March 11 during New York State’s shutdown mandate.

“The extraordinary contribution of Broadway’s original company plus those who have joined more recently cannot be overstated,” Disney Theatrical Productions President Thomas Schumacher said in a statement. “Frozen, like all shows, is wholly dependent on those who create and perform them but this was an uncommonly close and talented group and they’ll be missed. Finally, I have to acknowledge our incredible audiences; night after night, the fans showed us how much they loved this show and we look forward to seeing them at Frozen around the world.”

Disney will resume the national and international tours of the musical when possible.

Based on the 2013 Oscar-winning animated film, the musical opened opened March 22, 2018.

The closing of this one production should not signal others will close, according to Schumacher. Disney Theatrical Productions is behind the other Disney productions currently on Broadway, stating that “Frozen” was not as profitable as other productions. In addition, Disney Theatrical is developing a number of other projects.
