Photos: A look back at Disneyland in 1991 from the Disneyland Skyway

Long before the Disney Skyliner at Disney World, with its enclosed gondolas, was the Disney Skyway.

First operated at Disneyland in 1956 and then at the Magic Kingdom in 1971 and Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, these open air gondola lifts would take guests between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.

Now, the photos are limited. (Remember this is when you took photos with film and developing cost a lot of money, so you needed to be a little selective on what photos you took.)

Do you remember Afternoon Avenue? (Photo by Steve Liebman)

Disney Afternoon Avenue was a temporary land celebrating Disney’s afternoon TV shows. The area opened and closed in 1991, taking up the walkway from the Storybook Land Canal Boats to the old Videopolis. Here you entered Duckburg and were able to meet Launchpad McQuack, Scrooge McDuck, Chip ‘n’ Dale, King Louie, Gadget, and the Gummi Bears.

The PeopleMover opened in Disneyland on July 2, 1967 and took guests on “a grand circle tour” above Tomorrowland. The ride eventually closed on August 21, 1995, but its station and track infrastructure remain standing.
