Disney World reaches agreement with musicians’ union on furloughs

Walt Disney World and the American Federation of Musicians Local 389 have come to an agreement regarding furloughs.

This is but one of numerous unions representing Disney World employees and more agreements can be expected.

On March 30, Disney announced that top Walt Disney Co. execs will be taking pay cuts amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Executive Chairman Bob Iger forgoing his entire salary and CEO Bob Chapek taking a 50% cut.

This was followed on April 2, by Disney announcing it was furloughing U.S.-based executives, salaried and non-union hourly employees of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products on April 19.

This first agreement with the musician’s union was reached April 8. Here is Disney’s statement:

“American Federation of Musicians Local 389 and Disney have reached an agreement that will maintain members’ health insurance benefits coverage, educational support and additional employee assistance programs for hourly entertainment musician Cast Members during a temporary furlough effective April 19. This agreement provides an easier return to work when our community recovers from the impact of COVID-19. We are grateful to have worked together in good faith to help our cast members navigate these unprecedented times.”
