43K more Disney World employees will be furloughed on April 19
About 43,000 members of the Service Trades Council Union at Disney World will be furloughed on April 19 after an agreement was reached on Friday between the union and Disney.
The agreement maintains the union members’ health insurance benefits coverage, educational support, and additional employee assistance programs for up to 12 months during the temporary furlough.
The Service Trades Council Union is made up of six unions that represent attraction operators, bus drivers, custodial workers, character performers, housekeeping, lifeguards, vacation planners and more.
About 200 union workers deemed essential will remain on the job.
Disney and the American Federation of Musicians Local 389 came to an agreement regarding furloughs earlier.
On April 2, executives, salaried and non-union hourly employees of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products were told they would be on furlough starting April 19.
Workers will remain employees during this period and will receive full healthcare, with costs of employee and company premiums paid by Disney. In addition, all employees who are enrolled in Disney Aspire education program will continue to have access to the program.
Disney World has been closed since March 16 and Disney extended pay to full-time and part-time employees through April 18.
