Make your own magic: Creating a Disney playlist

Almost all of Disney’s animated movies have a moment when our hero breaks out into song, spilling out his or her deepest desires. Quasimodo wants to spend one day “Out There”; Ariel wants to be “Part of Your World”; and Elsa, as every parent on the planet knows, has decided to “Let It Go.”

These “I want” songs are upbeat and inspiring — they make me believe I can take on the world and win. A playlist of these songs is the perfect way to set the tone for the day, no matter what’s happening out in the real world.

In the spirit of sharing the magic, here’s my “I Want” playlist:

  • “Part of Your World,” The Little Mermaid
  • “Out There,” Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • “Go the Distance,” Hercules
  • “How Far I’ll Go,” Moana
  • “Belle,” Beauty and the Beast
  • “For the First Time in Forever,” Frozen
  • “Let it Go,” Frozen
  • “Into the Unknown,” Frozen 2
  • “I Just Can’t Wait to be King,” Lion King
  • “Just Around the Riverbend,” Pocahontas
  • “When Will My Life Begin,” Tangled
  • “Almost There,” The Princess and the Frog

The original “I want” songs didn’t make my list, because they’re not upbeat enough for me. But if you’re a fan of the classics, there are more: Snow White sang “Some Day My Prince Will Come”; Cinderella declared, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”; and Sleeping Beauty sang “I Wonder.”

But don’t villains have dreams and desires, too? Yes. Yes, they do. And they often pour forth their evil plans in highly entertaining songs. So if your idea of inspiration runs a little darker, here’s a playlist for you:

Tomatoa is “Shiny” in Moana
  • “Shiny,” Moana
  • “Hellfire,” The Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • “Mother Knows Best,” Tangled
  • “Friends on the Other Side,” The Princess and the Frog
  • “Cruella de Vil,” 101 Dalmatians
  • “Be Prepared,” The Lion King
  • “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” The Little Mermaid
  • “Gaston,” Beauty and the Beast
  • “I Wanna Be Like You,” The Jungle Book
