Georgia woman wins 2020 Disney Princess Half Marathon
As Kelly Wehman ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon course at Disney World on Sunday she had one thing on her mind to keep her going – her young son Andrew.
Her 6-year-old son’s journey through Down syndrome and cancer, propelled her past a crowded field to reach the finish line in first place.
“He’s my hero,’’ she said. “That’s what I think about when I’m running. That’s what pushes me.’’
Wehman, 33, from Ringgold, Georgia won with a time of 1:24:26, finishing ahead of Kellie Nickerson of Albuquerque, New Mexico (1:24:46) and Saeger Fischer of Portsmouth, New Hampshire (1:25:38).
The fourth person to cross the finish line, Marko Cheseto celebrated with some joyful dance moves. It was 11 years ago the Orlando-based runner lost both of his feet to frostbite.
Cheseto, 37, moved to the U.S. from Kenya to run competitively at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. After getting lost for three days in the woods during a run, during which it snowed more than a foot, he had to have both feet amputated.
He was fitted for running blades and continues to run competitively, holding the double amputee marathon world record of 2:42:24.
“The only disability we have as human being is the way we think,” Cheseto said after finishing the Disney Princess Half Marathon in 1:17:45. “But a physical disability that we have does not prevent one from achieving great things in life.”
