Remaining ‘Leave a Legacy’ monoliths coming down starting Aug. 6

Disney World removed the western portion of the “Leave a Legacy” monoliths earlier this summer at Epcot. Now, construction walls are expected to go up around the eastern portion of the monoliths Aug. 6 for removal.

The monoliths are coming down to make way for a new entrance. During construction, the stroller, wheelchair, and ECV rental location will remain open be accessible with a pathway around the outside of the construction site.

The Leave a Legacy program was launched during the resort’s Millennium Celebration in 1999. Photo-capture stations took the pictures, which were then etched onto steel tiles and mounted on one of 30 monoliths in the Leave a Legacy Plaza. Each stone ranges in height from 3 to 19 feet, and the heaviest one weighs more than 50,000 pounds.

While the monoliths are being removed, the Leave A Legacy will move to a new location just outside the park’s gateway. Below is a look at what the new Epcot entrance is will look like.
