Disney closing down Blue Sky Studios, which created ‘Ice Age, report says

Disney is closing down Blue Sky Studios, the animation studio that crated the “Ice Age” franchise, according to Deadline.com.

Disney which already runs the Walt Disney Animation and Pixar studios acquired the third animation studio in 2019 when it purchased 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets.

The past year has brought harsh financial times on Disney and the movie making business as the pandemic closed movie theaters and shuttered multiple productions.

“Given the current economic realities, after much consideration and evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close filmmaking operations at Blue Sky Studios,” a company spokesperson told Deadline.

Blue Sky was founded in 1987 and produced commercials and film shorts until being purchased in 199 by Fox. The animation studio has produced the “Ice Age” franchise, “Rio” franchise, “Ferdinand” and “The Peanuts Movie.”

Does this mean the end of all the characters created by Blue Sky, or could we see them resurrected by another animation studio? Nothing has been announced yet.

The Walt Disney Company will discuss its fiscal first quarter 2021 financial results this Thursday, Feb. 11, and this latest move might be a topic of discussion or questioning.
