Florida Gov. DeSantis declares state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Dorian

Governor Ron DeSantis issued declared a state of emergency for counties in the path of Hurricane Dorian and urging all Floridians on the East Coast to prepare for impact.

By declaring a state of emergency, DeSantis is ensuring that state and local governments have ample time, resources and flexibility to prepare. The State Emergency Operations Center will activate to a Level 2 on Thursday morning, enhancing the coordination between federal, state and local emergency management agencies.

“Today, I am declaring a state of emergency to ensure Florida is fully prepared for Hurricane Dorian,” DeSantis said. “It’s important for Floridians on the East Coast to monitor this storm closely. Every Florida resident should have seven days of supplies, including food, water and medicine, and should have a plan in case of disaster. I will continue to monitor Hurricane Dorian closely with emergency management officials. The state stands ready to support all counties along the coast as they prepare.”

As updates come out, it’s important that Floridians continue to pay attention to media and local officials as the track of this storm has been changing and can continue to change rapidly,” Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz said.

The storm could hit Florida as early as Monday morning, but the effects would be felt prior to landfall. Parts of Florida could expect 4 to 8 inches of rain, and up to 10 inches in isolated areas later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The cone of uncertainty shows the storm could land anywhere from coastal Georgia to the southern tip of Florida.

Those who are supposed to travel should be checking with their travel agents and airlines later this week for updates. Several U.S. airlines are offering travel waivers to customers with scheduled flights to the eastern Caribbean now. They would wait until more information about the storm is available on possible impact to Florida before making any statements.

As for the Disney Cruise Line, the company is monitoring the path and progress of Hurricane Dorian. At this time, based on the current predicted storm timing and path, Disney does not anticipate any changes to the Disney Fantasy sailing on Saturday, Aug. 31. The company said it is closely monitoring potential implications for the Disney Dream sailings on Friday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 2.
