Does the Magic Kingdom’s new Halloween fireworks show live up to its Spectacular name?

The centerpiece of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this year at the Magic Kingdom is a long-overdue upgrade to the fireworks show. It turns out the new show is well worth the wait.

The new Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular deftly weaves together pyrotechnics and projections, lasers and lighting, and it’s hosted by Jack Skellington.

In this case, Skeleton Jack from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a puppet that will make you wonder, “How’d they do that?” If I didn’t know it was a puppet, I’d still be scratching my head.

Jack appears at the beginning of the show to share how “anything can happen” on Halloween. From there, Jack’s ghost dog, Zero, takes Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald Duck on a trick-or-treating adventure. They encounter ghosts, skeletons and plenty of Disney villains on their not-so-scary adventure.

This show may be Disney’s best use of projection technology yet. The images dance and spin across the whole canvas of the castle, including the turrets that were added to either side several years ago.

The projections and pyrotechnics are woven together to help build the story; neither is an after-thought.

At 12 minutes, the show is a little on the short side, but the schedule during the party is very tight. The fireworks light up the night between two performances of Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade and two showings of the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular. There’s hardly a minute to spare.

The new fireworks show take place at 10:15 nightly during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party on select nights through Nov. 1.
