Disney history: Key anniversaries, events for August 2019

Let’s take a walk down memory lane and see what key Disney events, movie releases and park anniversaries are taking place in August.

August 1: The Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Disney World Resort opens in 2014.

August 2: The first guests set foot on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in 1998.  Located 225 nautical miles from Disney’s homeport of Port Canaveral, 
Florida, the island stretches 3.1 miles long and 2.2 miles wide.

August 3: Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 150-millionth guest in 1994.

August 4: Bay Lake Tower opens in 2009 at the Contemporary Resort in Disney. World. (10th anniversary) 

August 5: Adventure Thru Inner Space opens in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland in 1967.

August 6: In 1961, The Flying Saucers attraction opens in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland.

August 7: In 1967, the Astro Jets at Disneyland are rebranded as the Tomorrowland Jets.

August 8: “Bambi” has its world premiere in London in 1942, during World War II.

August 9: The Haunted Mansion opens at Disneyland in 1969. (50th anniversary)

August 10: In 2012, the Lion King wing at Disney’s Art of Animation in Disney World opens.

August 11: In 1955, U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon and his family visit Disneyland for the first time.

August 12: In 1965, the 50 millionth guest enters Disneyland.

August 13: In 2017, The Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios and The Universe of Energy at Epcot close.

August 14: Disneyland’s Alice in Wonderland grand opening takes place in 1958.

August 15: The Maiden voyage of the Disney Wonder takes place in 1999. (20th anniversary) 

August 16: Disneyland’s Dumbo Flying Elephants opens in Fantasyland in 1955.

August 17: “High School Musical 2” set a cable record for viewership on its debut on the Disney Channel in 2007.

August 18: Carnation Plaza Gardens opens in Disneyland in the Plaza Hub next to Sleeping Beauty Castle in 1956.

August 19: A new Marketplace Boat Dock and new Saratoga Bridge is opened officials at what was Downtown Disney (now Disney Springs) in Walt Disney World in 2014.

August 20: “Hot Dogs,” an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short was released in 1928. . It was thought to be the final Disney produced Oswald short until the rediscovery of “High Up” in 2017. 

August 21: The “Muppet Mobile Lab,” featuring Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker make their first appearance at Epcot in 2007.

August. 22: In 1929, “The Skeleton Dance” short film is released, marking the start of the Silly Symphony shorts. (90th anniversary)

August 23: In 1986, Congress passes a joint resolution designating Dec. 5, 1986 as “Walt Disney Recognition Day.”

August 24: The Ewok Village opens at the entrance to Star Tours at Hollywood Studios in 1989.

August 25: The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! opens at Hollywood Studios in 1989. (30th anniversary)

August 26: In 1918, Walt Disney lies about his age and forges his parents signature to be accepted into the American Ambulance Corps and serves in France following the end of World War I.

August 27: The Mickey Mouse Club Theatre opens in Disneyland’s Fantasyland in 1955.

August 28: The Art of Disney store opens in 1994 at Disney Village Marketplace, what is now Disney Springs at Walt Disney World.

August 29: In 1964, the movie “Mary Poppins” is released. (55th anniversary)

August 30: Ground is broken for Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort in 1995.

August 31: Walt and Roy Disney place a $10,000 deposit on a 51-acre tract on Buena Vista Street in Burbank, California. They will use this land to build a new studio.
