Have you seen this can’t-miss attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom?

There always seems to be something new to see or do at Disney World — and sometimes those things aren’t new, just new to you.

We recently experienced a show at Animal Kingdom that has become a must-do for us at the park: Winged Encounters — the Kingdom Takes Flight. (Not to be confused with Up, A Great Bird Adventure.)

This brief show fills the air in front of the Tree of Life with dozens of free-flying macaws — hyacinth, green-winged, blue and gold, scarlet, and more. The largest birds have a wingspan of 4 feet. The birds fly in from behind the Tree of Life and pose for a few minutes while their keepers share some information about them. (They live nearly as long as people do, which is just one of the things that makes them less-than-ideal housepets.) When the brief lesson is done, the keepers give you plenty of notice so you can film their dramatic departure.

Winged encounters is an amazing chance to get up close with these beautiful birds — one passed close enough to me that I could feel the wind from its impressive wings. It’s also a great opportunity to put the slow-mo setting on your camera to use.

The macaws really are free-flying; we took a backstage tour recently and saw a cherry picker outfitted with a huge branch lifted high over the roadway. It turns out they were waiting for one or more of the birds to come back from an unplanned adventure.

Winged Encounters takes place six times a day: 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. It’s easy to miss as you hustle past the tree to head for the rides, but it is well worth making a point to see it.
