Everything we know about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

The past 24 hours has given us a constant flow of new information about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge from a variety of sources.

To help you keep up with it all, we’ve tried to put everything into one place. We will update this as more information is released.

What is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge?

Some quick background: This 14-acre land is being built at Disneyland park in the Disneyland Resort and at Hollywood Studios in the Walt Disney World Resort.

These lands are being designed to be fully immersive, meaning guests are meant to feel as if they are visiting a planet in the Star Wars Universe, complete with winding paths, a marketplace, 65-foot AT-ATs, full-size X-wing starfighters and the famous full-sized Millennium Falcon. In addition, cast members will fully dress the part.

Resistance costumes (left) are rugged, military-inspired uniforms, with a soft, well-used feel. Vests and jackets feature patch details inspired by communicators worn in the films, and there is an optional hat to protect from the elements. The First Order (right) is a charcoal grey military-style uniform with structured shoulders taken directly from the looks we’ve seen on screen.

When will Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge open?

The lands will open in two phases and at different times at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Phase 1 is the opening of the entire land with all of the restaurants, stores and one attraction – Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Disneyland’s version opens on May 31, 2019. Disney World’s version opens on Aug. 29, 2019.

Phase 2 is the opening of the second attraction. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. No dates have been announced.

Why open in two phases?

Disney said that because of the high interest in the land and work has progressed better than expected, they are able to open earlier.

What planet is Galaxy’s Edge located on?

The planet is Batuu, a remote outpost that was once a busy crossroads but fell out of favor with the rise of hyperspace travel. “Now home to those who prefer to stay out of the mainstream, it has become a thriving port for smugglers, rogue traders and adventurers traveling between the frontier and uncharted space,” according to Scott Trowbridge,  Portfolio Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering.

Guests will visit a village known as Black Spire Outpost, the largest settlement on the plant Batuu. It is known as a stop for traders, adventurers and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space.

“Widely known for the petrified remains of its once-towering ancient trees, the spires now stand guard across the river valleys and plains and have long captured the imagination of travelers to this planet,” Trowbridge has said.

Black Spire Outpost is the name of the village inside of the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The village is closely associated with the geological formations that surround it. As the largest settlement on the planet Batuu, Black Spire Outpost is an infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open at Disneyland Resort in summer 2019 and at Walt Disney World Resort in late fall 2019. (Disney)

What rides are in the new Star Wars Land?

There are two rides in the land:

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Height requirement: 38 inches or taller.

You are part of the flight crew of the Millennium Falcon and are asked to go on a mission.

“There are 200 some odd buttons, knobs and switches on the inside of the cockpit and they all do stuff. If you’re the gunners in the center there and you don’t fire back on those TIE Fighters fast enough they’re going to riddle the hull with laser bolts, the engineers in back, it’s really up to them to keep the whole Falcon in working order so they’re back there furiously working away at their various systems,” Asa Kalama, Executive Creative Director of the attraction said.

While you wait your turn in the cockpit, you will be able to walk the halls of the Falcon, including the holographic chess-like game called Dejarik that was in the original film, according to the Associated Press.

You will meet a 7-foot-tall Hondo, a Weequay pirate introduced in Clone Wars. Hondo is now the proprietor of Ohnaka Transport Solutions and has been loaned the Millennium Falcon by Chewbacca for some “deliveries.” Hondo will give you your mission.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Height requirement: 40 inches or taller.

This ride is one of the most advanced and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering, D23 writes.

“On a full-size starship, guests play as new Resistance recruits and go on a journey. A hologram image of Rey will appear with a message before guests board their ship and take off from Batuu and head into the orbit,” AP writes.

“A tractor beam pulls the transport into the Destroyer, and when the doors open guests are standing in a giant auditorium-sized First Order hangar, filled with scores of Stormtroopers, and hung with TIE Fighters along the walls,” Entertainment Weekly writes.

You are then taken to a cell, which is similar to the room where Kylo Ren tortured Poe Dameron. You then get broken out and placed on a trackless cart that takes you through the remainder of the ride where you eventually met Kylo Ren.

What food will be sold in the Star Wars land?

There will be a number of places where guests will be able to grab snacks and drinks. Everything is, of course, Star Wars-themed.

Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo: Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs has traveled throughout the galaxy following his longtime gig as the chef at Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana and brings exotic flavors and unusual dishes to his traveling diner, Tuggs’ Grub.

According to D23: Entrées include Braised Shaak Roast, featuring beef pot roast with cavatelli pasta, kale, and mushrooms; fried Endorian Tip-Yip, a decadent chicken dish with roasted vegetable mash and herb gravy; Felucian Garden Spread, a plant-based kefta “meatball” dish with herb hummus and tomato-cucumber relish with pita bread; Ithorian Garden Loaf, a plant-based “meatloaf” dish served with roasted vegetable mash, seasonal vegetables, and mushroom sauce; smoked Kaadu Ribs, featuring smoked country sticky pork ribs with blueberry corn muffin and cabbage slaw; oven-roasted Burra Fish, featuring Dijon-crusted sustainable fish with mixed greens, roasted vegetables, quinoa, and pumpkin seeds with a creamy green curry ranch dressing; oven-roasted Tip Yip, featuring roasted chicken with mixed greens, roasted vegetables, quinoa, and pumpkin seeds with a creamy green curry ranch dressing; and Yobshrimp Noodle Salad, a marinated noodle salad with chilled shrimp. Dessert options include a raspberry crème puff with passion fruit mousse, and chocolate cake with white chocolate mouse and coffee custard. Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo has two children’s menu options: fried chicken with macaroni and cheese; and chilled shrimp with vegetables and rice noodle salad (with sweet orange dressing).

Ronto Roasters: A recycled podracing engine fires up a spit of exotic meats, meticulously turned by a former smelter droid, 8D-J8. Guests can even sample some of the tasty Ronto fare. Think BBQ.

Milk Stand: The place to go for farm-fresh blue milk or green milk, direct from Bubo Wamba Family Farms.

Kat Saka’s Kettle: One of the many street market stalls, this grain vendor sells the ever-popular Outpost Mix (blend of sweet, savory and spicy popcorn).

Oga’s Cantina: This is the bar where alcohol will be served in Disneyland and Disney World. At Disneyland, you will not be able to leave the cantina with alcohol. Disney as described Oga’s Cantina is “described as a notorious local watering hole to unwind, conduct shady business, and maybe even encounter a friend…or a foe.” Oga Garra is the proprietor of the cantina, which attracts some of the most interesting and disreputable characters in the galaxy. You never know when a stormtrooper or a familiar face will show up, Disney promises. RX-24, the former Star Speeder 3000 pilot droid who first appeared in Star Tours, is the cantina’s DJ.

Shopping

No matter what world you’re on in Disney’s galaxy, you know there is going to be shopping. Here’s the lineup at Galaxy’s Edge:

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities: For those in the know, Dok-Ondar is the Ithorian you seek for selling and buying rare and uniquely-valued items from across the galaxy and spanning all eras.

Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers: Guests come to the workshop to meet with the Gatherers – a secretive group of people who have dedicated their lives to restoring balance in the galaxy by passing on their knowledge of Jedi lore and the Force. The workshop Master guides guests to customize and build their own unique lightsabers, and instructs them on the ways of the Jedi.

Droid Depot: Visitors to Mubo’s workshop can choose parts and construct their own individual astromech droids to accompany them on their journey, and then take them home with them. There will also be droids located outside you will be able to interact with using the Play Disney Parks app.

First Order Cargo: A spaceport hangar bay serves as the temporary base and landing spot for the First Order. First Order officers have brought in crates of gear, uniforms and other supplies to win the hearts and minds of locals and visitors to Black Spire Outpost.

Resistance Supply: Resistance members and local sympathizers oversee a makeshift stall that supplies Resistance uniforms, pins, badges, hats, helmets, jackets, maps, tools, training supplies, food rations and other items.

Toydarian Toymaker: A market stall full of toys you would find on Batuu.

Creature Stall: A look at some of the interesting critters you can take home with you. There will be a number of animated creatures, including fan favorites like the Loth-cat and a Worrt, according to Techcrunch.

Black Spire Outfitters: A clothing and apparel location, to help you look the part.

The Jewels of Both: Accessories and other Batuu bling.

The Music

A large part of Star Wars has always been the music of John Williams. Disney was able to get the Oscar-winning composer Williams to create new and original Star Wars themes exclusively for the land.

Play Disney Parks app

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will rely heavily on the burgeoning Play Disney Parks app to help enhance your experience and entertain you while waiting in anticipated long lines.

Here’s what you will be able to do with the app:

Creat your own story:Since the announcement was made about the creation of the new land, Disney has said that what you do while in the land will have an impact on your experience. This means that you will also be able to interact with various characters and go on your own missions.

You will be able to take on a “job,” whether it is for the Resistance, First Order, or some of the local gangs at the outpost.

The outcome of your experience on the attraction Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, where you are given a mission to complete and become part of a crew flying the Millennium Falcon, will have an impact on your story.

You will be able to speak with droids around the village to find out who is looking to hire. There will be points and rewards for completing tasks. Also, whatever information you collect stays with you.

Translate: All around the outpost are signs and labels on containers written in languages you probably won’t understand (though, there is always one person out there). The app will translate the labels. If the label is encrypted you will need to solve a puzzle to activate the translation. In addition, there will be a number of people speaking in alien languages. To help you understand them, the app will act as your audio translators.

Hacking into surveillance boxes:When you arrive at the Black Spire Outpost, remember you are being watched by the First Order. Around the outpost are surveillance boxes. The app will let you hack into them and turn them on or off, depending on the needs of the Resistance. To gain access, you will need to solve a puzzle. It sounds as though you will be playing against others.

Monitoring communications:As in any off-world outpost under siege, there are numerous transmissions that will be taking place. “To get an idea of what those transmissions are, you open your tuning tool, and you can locate transmissions that are being passed back and forth, sometimes between factions, sometimes just between villagers,” Imagineering concept designer Casey Ging tells Entertainment Weekly.

You will be able to listen in on these. And if some of them are in code, you will be able to decode them by solving a puzzle.
