Disney World’s fire-breathing dragon returns today to the afternoon parade

Maleficent, the fire-breathing dragon, that has been sidelined since May 2018 is returning to the Festival of Fantasy Parade at the Magic Kingdom this afternoon, Disney announced.

“While she still has her same Steampunk style and signature wicked smile, the Maleficent dragon will be sporting a refreshed look, enhanced with new features designed to keep her in check while on show,” the Disney Park Blog announced.

Also making their return to the parade are Prince Phillip; the Fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather; and the mischievous “Ravens” who fly around Maleficent just waiting to do her bidding.

The 53-foot long steampunk-inspired Maleficent Dragon caught on fire May 11, 2018,during the parade.

No injuries to employees or guests were reported and the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire took place in the Liberty Square area of the park near to the Ye Old Christmas Shoppe and the Sleepy Hollow quick service area.

As Maleficent rolls down the parade route in chase of Prince Phillip, the dragon occasionally raises its head and shoots out fire into the air. One cast member rides inside the dragon near the base of the neck while another manipulates the tail in the back.
