How Mickey Mouse Disco broke a music record

You’ve heard of Disco Duck. But Mickey Mouse Disco?

In 1979, Disneyland Records released a Mickey Mouse Disco album that featured disco versions of Disney songs. Remember Disco? If not, good for you.

When the album first hit the stores in July 1979 sales were modest and then Disney started a marketing campaign, according to Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records. The album sales started to soar.

The album peaked at 35 on Billboard’s Pop Albums Chart and by October 1984, the album was awarded Double Platinum status, meaning it sold more than 2 million copies. It became the first children’s album ever to receive that status.

The album’s success also gave the music division the clout to pursue more original album concepts.
