Which Mickey Mouse cartoons are the all-time best?

Mickey Mouse 90th anniversary, 90th birthday , Mickey Mouse's birthdayWhich are the best Mickey mouse cartoons? Disney fans could debate the question all day long.

Or, if you’re not inclined to argue, you can defer to the experts. In 1994, four of Mickey’s cartoons were included in the book “The 50 Greatest Cartoons,” a compilation by animation historian Jerry Beck, who polled 1,000 people working in the animation industry.

Four Mickey Mouse cartoons made the list, all of them produced before 1940.

We wonder if the poll were taken again today how Mickey’s classic cartoons would stack up against more recent outings like “Get a Horse” — not to mention animated shorts from elsewhere in the house of the Mouse, including Pixar.

Here are the four Mickey Mouse that made the 1994 list:

Mickey Mouse in The Band Concert

3. The Band Concert (1935)

The first Mickey Mouse film produced in color, “The Band Concert” tops this list of the best Disney cartoons. The story follows Mickey Mouse as he conducts a small band through a distraction-filled concert.

Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie

13. Steamboat Willie (1928)

“Steamboat Willie” is known for two big firsts: It introduced Mickey Mouse, and it was the first fully synchronized sound cartoon, including character sounds and a musical score. It was actually the third Mickey Mouse cartoon produced, but it was the first one to be released in theaters.

Mickey Mouse in the Brave Little Tailor

26. Brave Little Tailor (1938)

This fairy tale adaptation has Mickey Mouse taking on a giant with nothing but needle and thread. The Brave Little Tailor was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1939, but lost to another Disney cartoon, Ferdinand the Bull.

Mickey Mouse in Clock Cleaners

27. Clock Cleaners (1937)

Clock Cleaners follows Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy as they work as janitors in a clock tower. Almost 60 years after the cartoon’s release, it caused some controversy for Disney when Wal-Mart pulled the video because it allegedly contained Donald Duck using an obscenity. But who can understand Donald? Disney re-dubbed the offending scene for subsequent releases.
