Hurricane Florence forces Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort to close

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina is closing today, Sept. 11, 2018 and is expected to remain closed through Sept. 17 due to the approaching Hurricane Florence, Disney announced.

Hurricane Florence is moving with a force of 130 mph winds and is expected to strengthen later today. The storm is expected to bring life-threatening storm surges are expected along the coasts of North and South Carollina, according to the 11 a.m. updated from the National Hurricane Center.

As of 11 a.m. Florence is moving west-northwest near 16 mph on the forecast track and will move over the southwester Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas through Wednesday, and approach the coast of North Carolina or South Carolina.

Florence is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane through landfall, according to the Hurricane Center.

The latest forecast has Hurricane Florence heading toward the Carolina coast. This Category 4 storm will be the strongest to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Andrew slammed into Florida as a Category 5 storm.

While Hilton Head is now on the outskirts of the impacted area, the storm’s path can still change and is danger of storm sturge.

Built in Carolina island-style architecture, Disney’s Hilton Head Island resort opened in 1996 with 107 units. The resort is set among age-old live oak trees and magnificent marshes on a 15-acre island within Shelter Cove Harbour. It has an oceanfront three-and-a-half-acre site a shuttle ride away.
