Last chance to see the ‘readhead’ as she is at Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean
This will be the last weekend to see the “redhead” as she is in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World.
The famous Bride Auction scene (“We want the Redhead”) in the Pirates of the Caribbean will be changed during the refurbishment which will start Feb. 26 and last until March 18, 2018.
No longer will the scene show pirates auctioning off women and pirates calling out “We wants the redhead.”
The scene has been viewed as a sexist representation. When Disney announced the change last year, Suzi Brown, spokeswoman for the Disneyland Resort said in a statement: “We believe the time is right to turn the page to a new story in this scene, consistent with the humorous, adventurous spirit of the attraction.”
In the new version, the audio-animatronic redhead character will be “joining the pirates’ ranks and helping the local townspeople ‘unload’ their valuables at the Mercado auction.”
The change, according to a statement made last year by Kathy Mangum, senior vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering, “Our team thought long and hard about how to best update this scene. Given the redhead has long been a fan favorite, we wanted to keep her as a pivotal part of the story, so we made her a plundering pirate! We think this keeps to the original vision of the attraction as envisioned by Marc Davis, X Atencio and the other Disney legends who first brought this classic to life.”
This change comes about 20 years after scenes of pirates chasing were alerted.
Disneyland Paris made this change last July. The video below shows the changes.
