Disney World to get a new solar farm
A new solar farm will be built on Disney World property that is 10 times larger than the current solar farm near Epcot.
Miami-based Origis Energy will build the facility on 270 acres on the western edge of Disney World off State Highway 429, west of the Magnolia and Palm golf courses. The 518,00 solar panels will provide renewable energy to the Reedy Creek Improvement District and Disney World.
Reedy Creek signed the agreement with Origis for the 50mw farm. Once complete, the solar facility will generate approximately 120,000-megawatt hours of power each year, enough to power 10,201 homes, according to Orgis.
“We are honored to assist the Reedy Creek Improvement District leadership team realize their vision for the use of utility-scale clean energy,” Johan Vanhee, Managing Director, Operations and Business Development of Origis Energy, said “Florida is our company’s home state as well. We commend the Reedy Creek Improvement District on the deployment of more solar energy in the Sunshine State.”
Construction is expected to begin in late spring and be done by the end of 2018.
The Hidden Mickey solar 5mw farm was built by Duke Energy and produces enough to power up to 1,000 homes.
