RunDisney issues weather advisory for 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon
RunDisney is providing a list of weather tips to all those participating in the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon this weekend due to the unusually cold temperatures.
This is the 25th anniversary of the event and the weather outlook for the first day of the event is expected to bring freezing temperatures, thus the weather advisory.
Disney World is under a freeze watch from 1 to 9 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2018. There is also a wind-chill advisory in place from 7 p.m. January 3 until 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service,
The first event of the weekend, the 5K race, is scheduled to kick off at 5:30 a.m. on January 4. The temperature is predicted to be about 35 degrees but will feel like 28 degrees according to the Weather Channel.
Friday, Jan. 5, when the 10K is supposed to kick off the temperature is also supposed to be 35 degrees, but feel like 28 degrees. The temperatures are supposed to rise for the Saturday half marathon and Sunday marathon races.
Last year the half marathon and Kids Races were cancelled due to an elevated risk of lightning in the area from the thunderstorms.
This year, RunDisney is encouraging runners to:
Bundle up
Protect your skin with sunscreen and lip screen and lip balm with sun and wind, even though it is cold.
Dry off immediately after finishing a race to get out of any wet clothing.
Stay hydrated, even if it is cold remaining hydrated is important.
Know the danger signs. “This week’s cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. Symptoms include numbness, tingling or aching, and bluish or pale skin. If you experience these, get to the nearest medical tent on the course or ask any runDisney volunteer to notify the medical team.
As a reminder, all medical stations will have the appropriate flag color displayed according to existing conditions.”
