New agreement will allow E-ZPass drivers to go through Orlando tolls
Driving around Disney World and central Florida from the Northeast and parts of the Midwest will be a bit easier for those who already have E-ZPass.
Starting in the Spring 2018, the E-Pass roads run by Central Florida Expressway Authority will start allowed the E-ZPass transponders to work for payment.
“Expanding our network into Florida is wonderful news for E-ZPass customers who count themselves among the estimated 68 million annual visitors to the Orlando area,” E-ZPass Group Executive Director P.J. Wilkins said in an announcement. “One of our main objectives is to improve the ease and uninterrupted travel that E-ZPass customers enjoy, and portability to the Sunshine State is certainly a common request.”
But be warned this not going to the panacea drivers are hope. Florida toll roads are run by different organization. So some roads like State Roads 417, 429, and 528 are dual-governed with sections of the roads managed by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise which uses SundPass transponders.
CFX and FTE have a reciprocal agreement that allows both types of transponders to be accepted on all Florida toll roads, but only CFX has the new agreement with E-ZPass won’t be able to use any of the express pass toll booths on the Florida Turnpike or other Florida roads where SunPass is the primary transponder.
And for those in Florida, your E-PASS toll transponders will not be able to be used at existing E-ZPass facilities. But CFX E-PASS customers will be able to request a special tag that does work at all E-ZPass toll plazas in the 16 state region. Details are still being worked out and should be announced soon.
CFX Chairman and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said, “As the first agency to offer electronic toll collection in the State of Florida, it is only fitting that we are the first to accept E-ZPASS as payment on our system. We are thrilled that more visitors than ever will experience seamless travel on the beltway that connects our community.”
Specific dates of when this go into effect will be announced later. This impacts people with E-ZPass from the following states: Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia.
EPASS already has reciprocal agreements with toll agencies in Georgia and North Carolina.
