Lucasfilm makes announcement about recreating Carrie Fisher’s likeness in future Star Wars films

Carrie Fisher’s likeness will not be digitally recreated for future Star Wars films, Lucasfilm announced.

There has been rampant speculation about using Fisher’s likeness in future films as Lucasfilm did with the late Peter Cushing in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Cushing portrayed Grand Moff Tarkin, the Death Star commander in “Star Wars: A New Hope” in 1977. He died in 1994. His estate agreed to lend his likeness to the latest film.

Since Rouge One came out there has been a lot of speculation that Lucasfilm was in negotiations with Fisher’s estate to use her likeness. Fisher, who died Dec. 27, 2016, will appear in the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” She had finished shooting the upcoming sequel prior to her death. She was also scheduled to appear in “Star Wars: Episode IX”

Lucasfilm, which normally never comments on rumors and speculation, released this statement:

“We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.

“Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.”
