Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars film release schedule for 2017 to 2020
The films being released by Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm in 2017 and beyond rely heavily on sequels and films focusing on characters already introduced.
Disney’s live action lineup are remakes of Disney animated films, Marvel is expanding the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor franchises, Pixar is bringing us Cars 3 and we will see Star Wars Episode VIII coming out at the end of the year.
There is one original film scheduled. It is Pixar’s “Coco” in November. It is based on an original idea based on the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos. There are other Walt Disney Pictures movies in production, but nothing has been placed on the schedule. Here is a look at what is scheduled for release:
Beauty and the Beast (live action) – March 17, 2017
The live action re-make of the animated classic “Beauty and the Beast” comes complete with old music and new music. The film stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Prince/Beast.
Born in China – April 21, 2017
“Born in China” is the 9th Disneynature film. This one focuses on wildlife in China, including rare footage of endangered snow leopards.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5, 2017
Not only are we looking forward to the continuing story for Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” but the soundtrack. ” The story will focus on the parentage of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, with the iconic Kurt Russell filling the role of Peter’s birth father, Ego the Living Planet. Oh, and we get to see Baby Groot.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – May 26, 2017
The fifth film in this series, based off the famous Disney Parks ride of the same name, stars Johnny Depp once again at Captain Jack Sparrow. This script has Sparrow fighting deadly ghost pirates (sounds familiar) led by his old nemesis, Captain Salazar. The only way out of it is for Jack to find an artifact (sounds familiar). This one is the legendary Trident of Poseidon, which gives the possessor total control over the seas. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.
Cars 3 -June 16, 2017
The trailer for this film is dark and bleak. The legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. His only way back is form the help of a young race technician with her own plan to win and inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns.
Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 7, 2017.
Granted this is not a Disney movie, but a Sony/Marvel Studios movie welcoming Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his own movie. He was introduced in “Captain America: Civil War.” In this version of Spider-Man we catch up with the webslinger while in high school. Peter Parker/Spider-man /(Tom Holland), with the help of his mentor Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) , tries to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens, New York with fighting crime. He goes up against The Vulture (Michael Keaton).

Thor: Ragnork – November 3, 2017
After the events of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned on another world without his hammer. He must outlive a gladiatorial duel against his old friend — the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) — in order to return to Asgard in time to stop Hela (Cate Blanchet) and the final destruction of the world, called Ragnarök.
Coco – November 22, 2017
This Pixar film focuses on Miquel (Anthony Gonzalez). Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi- December 15, 2017
Rian Johnson takes over the helm of this film from J.J. Abrams. We expect Ray (Daisy Ridley) will return Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) lightsaber to him. We also expect to Luke will teach Rey about being a Jedi Knight and we may find out why the Force is so strong in her, and more of her backstory. We also expect, she, Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) will go up again Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) and Snoke (Andy Serkis).
Magic Camp – Sometime in 2017
Adam DeVine plays Andy, a magician whose career is not doing well, so he returns to the magic camp of his youth as a counselor. His nemesis, Darkwood, play by Gillian Jacobs also returns as a counselor. At the end of the summer each of the counselors and their campers compete in contest. In the process, Andy is inspired by the young campers and rediscovers his passion for magic.
Black Panther -February 16, 2018
Chadwick Boseman reprises his role as T’Challa , the Black Panther. Not much is known of the plot, but Lupita Nyong’o slipped at Sand Diego Comic-Con 2016 a little: “The story of this Black Panther is – what am I allowed to say? – that the Black Panther’s leadership is really threatened by two foes who come together, and so Black Panther gets the help of the CIA and the Dora Milaje to try and defeat the enemy,” she said.
Nyong’o will play Nakia, Danai Gurira as Oyoke, and his Creedand Fruitvale star Michael B. Jordan as villain Erik Killmonger.

Taking place six years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph, the story will center on Ralph’s adventures in the Internet data space.
A Wrinkle in Time – April 6, 2018
The is a live-action film Walt Disney Studios is based on the science fantasy novel of the same name. The book is about a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called tesseract (not to worry Marvel fans, this is not a cross-over).
The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Storm Reid, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Michael Peña, and Zach Galifianakis. P
Avengers Infinity War – May 4, 2018
Marvel is finally tackling the Infinity War storyline. The main antagonist will be Thanos (played by Josh Brolin), and the movie will no doubt unite many, many characters from the MCU. Moreover, Marvel adds that Avengers: Infinity War is the beginning of the culmination of everything that has come before.
Young Han Solo Movie – Announced as May 25, 2018, but rumored delay to Dec. 13, 2018
The success “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is putting a lot of pressure on the next independent Star Wars film. There is no announcement of a plot, but there has been casting: Alden Ehrenreich will play the young smuggler, Donald Glover will play the young Lando Calrissian and Woody Harrelson has just confirmed he will be in the movie, most likely Han Solo’s mentor.
The Incredibles 2 – June 15, 2018
The next Pixar sequel brings the family back together. What foes could they now be up against? Puberty?
AntMan and the Wasp – July 6, 2018
Nothing, beyond a title and release date from Marvel. The title suggests Evangeline Lily’s Wasp will be the co-star of this film and not just the female lead.

A live action film based on the Disney animated hit focusing on a young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a warrior in order to save her father.
Gigantic – Nov. 21, 2018
This Walt Disney Animation Studio movie is loosely based on “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
Mary Poppins Returns – Dec. 25, 2018
According to a Disney plot summary: In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
The movie stars Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack.
Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019
Brie Larson plays Marvel’s first female-led superhero film. This version focuses on Carol Danvers, “whose adventures are earthbound but whose powers are based in the cosmic realm.”

Toy Story 4 – June 21, 2019
Pixar’s juggernaut continues. The entire gang is back -Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles and Laurie Metcalf will reprise their respective roles of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head and Andy’s Mom. There is a lot of speculation, but the specific plot has not been released.
Star Wars: Episode IX – May 23, 2019
This film should conclude the trilogy started with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 – July 5, 2019
The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected.
