Disney pulls costume from Moana movie after racism complaints

Disney is no longer selling the costume of the revered Polynesian figure Maui from the upcoming movie “Moana” after a backlash of people comparing the costume to blackface, according to the Associated Press.

The full body costume which has been pulled from the shelves.

The full body costume contains a long-sleeve brown shirt and long pants featuring full-body tattoos.

“The team behind Moana has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some,” the company said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize and are pulling the costume from our website and stores.”

The movie focuses on Moana, a teenager who sails on a mission to save her people. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the open ocean encountering monsters.

Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.
