A mermaid series is coming to Disney’s Freeform. But it’s not what you think.

There will be no dinglehoppers in “The Deep.”

Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel formerly known as ABC Family, has given the green light to a series about mermaids. But this is not your mother’s “Little Mermaid.”

The hour-long drama series is described as “violent” and “thrilling,” with “themes of obsession and violence.” In the world of “The Deep,” it does not sound as if life is better under the sea.

“ ‘The Deep’ is a very different show than one would expect when they hear the word ‘mermaid’ – the mermaid tale has been reinvented in this pilot,” Freeform executive Karey Burke said in a statement from the network. “The writing is thrilling, stories complex and scary, and we are excited to explore the themes of obsession and violence through these amazing creatures.”

The story takes place in a coastal town known for its local legends about mermaids — which, of course, turn out to be true. That’s when the battle for “The Deep” begins, with “predatory” mermaids returning to reclaim their right to the ocean.
The series begins filming in Vancouver in September, and will be run by Emily Whitesell (“Finding Carter.” Scott Stewart (“Dominion”) will direct. It will be written by Eric Wald and Dean White, who will also be listed as executive producers, along with Brad Luff, Nate Hopper and RD Robb. No word yet on casting.
