
Disney Parks see 3 percent increase in attendance in 2017
Disney Parks grew in attendance by 3 percent in 2017, largely driven by the newly opened Pandora-The World of Avatar land at Animal Kingdom, according to the 2017 TEA/AECOM Theme Index.
Pandora, featuring Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey, helped Animal Kingdom account for the 15 percent increase in attendance in 2017 from 2016.
After a fairly flat 2016, the industry resumed its historic pace of growth in 2017 fueled by Disney, China, and Indoor Entertainment Centers, according to the report. The top 25 theme parks expanded volume by 4.7 percent.
Disney parks held eight spots on the top 10 list worldwide. In North America, six Disney parks were among the Top 20 theme parks with those six accounting for 55 percent of the total attendance of all parks.
Shanghai Disneyland, in its first complete calendar year of operations, had 11 million visitors making it the eighth most visited theme park in the world.
In general, the top 20 theme parks in North America in 2017 saw a 2.3 percent increase, exceeding 150 million in attendance.
Universal theme parks in North America also had another good year, with 4.9 percent estimated growth in visitation.
