Disney offers Magic Kingdom ‘After Hours’ event — at a steep price

Disney is known for “plussing it” — adding an additional, unexpected “oomph” to an experience or an attraction. Or, increasingly, a price tag.

Disney’s newest hard-ticket event, Disney After Hours, allows guests to stay in the Magic Kingdom park for three hours after closing on selected nights. The price? $149 per person, plus tax.

Have you picked yourself up off the floor yet?

For $149, guests can arrive at the park as early as 7 p.m. and stay in the Magic Kingdom for three hours past closing time (10 p.m. or 11 p.m., depending on the night). The major attractions will remain open, including popular meet-and-greets. Also included: ice cream and bottled beverages. (I suppose some people could eat $149 worth of Mickey bars!)

Note that this does not include a full day in the park. Tops, it buys you 7 hours — assuming you don’t have passes to begin with.

Disney promises a limited number of tickets are available, but it’s not saying how limited.

If the hard-ticket Halloween and Christmas events are any indication, the number of tickets isn’t that small. Those events can be crowded, but if you’re in it for short lines at the rides, they can be appealing because the parades and fireworks keep people away from the rides. But those events only cost around $80 — a bargain in comparison to this $149 After Hours event. And at the After Hours event, there will be nothing but Mickey bars to keep guests off the rides.

The company typically does a very good job of finding the right price
point — low enough to make it appealing but high enough to make a
profit and keep the crowds down.

For the record, here are the dates and times for Disney After Hours this spring:

  • April 28 and May 5, 2016 from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM
  • April 14 and 21, and May 8, 12 and 19, 2016 from 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM

To
purchase a ticket,
call the Disney Reservation Center at (407) 827-7185. Guests staying at Disney resorts will have access to the transportation system for 2 hours after closing time.

For its part, Disney wrote about the after-hours event on Oh My Disney, but not on the Disney Parks Blog. Could that be because there are no comments on OMD — so no public backlash at the price?
