Soarin’ to close at Disney World in January 2016 for major refurbishment

Soarin’ at Disney World will close in January for refurbishment and won’t reopen until the summer of 2016, Disney announced on its site.

The popular ride in Epcot (you can either wait for an hour or get a FastPass)will close Jan. 4, 2016 and  is most likely going to be changed over to the new Soarin’ Around the World.

The attraction comes with a new film that will take guest over some of the world’s most famous landscapes and man-made wonders.

The ride will use the same technology that will make the Shanghai attraction, Soaring Over the Horizon.

Soarin’ over California opened Feb. 8, 2001 at California Adventure in Disneyland and opened in Epcot at Disney World in 2005, but just called Soarin’.
The idea of how to show the ride was developed over the weekend at the at home Walt Disney Imagineering show/ride engineer Mark Summer.

“I think I’m like a lot of Imagineers where I don’t necessarily leave my job at the office,” Sumner has said.

He pulled out a 40-year-old erector set from the attic and over a couple of hours built a working model.

The small erector set grew into a ride containing 1 million pounds of steel that is able to lift 37 tons.
