Take My Money Mickey: Back-to-school shopping for adults
This time of year, every year, I get the urge to buy pencils and Post-It notes and go back to school. The problem is, I no longer go to school. I haven’t technically needed to go back-to-school shopping in, well, it stretches into decades now. Still, it’s almost Labor Day again, and the itch is hard to resist.
For those of you who get the same feeling — and I know you’re out there — I’ve put together a few things that might satisfy that back-to-school shopping impulse, but also might be something an adult could actually use.
Everyone loves a varsity jacket. In this case, it’s a sweatshirt styled like a letter jacket. The 2015 jacket is available for both Disney World and Disneyland ($59.95).
A second Disneyland version is on sale now for $51.95, but sizes are limited. I’m hoping Disney will make more styles like this; it’s so cute and versatile.
A new pair of vans is a must for a lot of teens going back to school — so why not for us too? This year Vans introduced a line of adorable Disney shoes and accessories. These Minnie Mouse slip-ons ($60) are just one style; Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Winnie the Pooh and the Disney princesses also are represented in the collection.
Every student needs a backpack — and so do a lot of us grown-ups. If you’re willing to go bright-and-bold, check out this Disney Old School backpack from Vans ($50).
Or, you can go a little more upscale with a Vera Bradley Campus backpack ($125).
If you can’t quite bring yourself to carry a Disney backpack to work, you might show your Disney style with a laptop sleeve. Zazzle.com for a selection of Disney styles, most for MacBooks and iPads, including this cute Peek-a-Book Mickey Mouse (starting at about $70).
Most kids need a pencil case, and maybe you could use one too — I use mine to corral all the cords I carry when I travel. A Vera Bradley cosmetics bag ($32) would work nicely; it’s lined with plastic and is machine washable.
Tsum Tsums are pretty irresistible by themselves, but this one has an added practical purpose. The plush pencil case also comes in Mickey, Minnie and Dumbo styles ($12.95 each). Don’t expect this one to hold your cord collection; it looks to be more plush than pencil case, but it’s too cute to ignore.
