Disneyland pledges $1 billion expansion to avoid ticket tax

The $1 billion Disneyland expansion with new attractions looks like it is a go.

The Anaheim City Council narrowly approved a deal by 3-2, which extends the city’s tax-ban on admission ticket prices for 30 years in return for Disney’s pledge to spend at least $1 billion on new attractions and a 5,000-space parking structure.

Construction needs to begin by the end of 2017 and be complete by 2024, according to the Orange County Register.

No decisions have been made on potential rides or themed lands. In addition, Disney has not said if the expansion would take place at Disneyland and/or California Adventure. Some theorize that the new areas could focus on the Marvel, Pixar and “Star Wars” franchises.

“We are excited about what the future holds for Anaheim and the Disneyland Resort as we work together to ensure our city continues to thrive and grow,” Michael Colglazier, president of Disneyland Resort, said in a statement.
