Friday is the ‘Last Day of Summer’ for Phineas and Ferb
Summer vacation has barely started for most of us, but for Phineas and Ferb and the gang, it’s coming to an end on Friday.
The long-running, Emmy-winning cartoon series comes to an end Friday with its final episode, “Last Day of Summer,” which airs at 9 p.m. on Disney XD. To get viewers in the mood, the cable channel is in the midst of a 73-hour marathon showing all four seasons — plus movies and specials — in order. (The Star Wars special airs at 7:15 p.m. Friday, in case you were wondering.)

To me, “Phineas and Ferb” is the ultimate celebration of the joy and creativity of childhood — that time when our imaginations aren’t hemmed in by adult expectations or the fear of failure. As adults, we try to tell ourselves we are only limited by our imaginations, but we find it increasingly hard to believe. We fear … being busted. “Phineas and Ferb” reminds us that we didn’t always feel that way.
We’re not the only ones showing Phineas and Ferb some love before they take their final bow. The Observer talked to creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh about the show’s conclusion. And Slate ruminated on the show’s 5 best songs and presented the Tribute-inator.
There’s still a bit more original Phineas and Ferb — or at least Agent P — on the horizon. An hourlong special focusing on Agent P and his fellow animal agents, “The O.W.C.A. Files,” will air this fall.
And we haven’t heard the last from the show’s creators. Povenmire and Marsh are getting a new show on Disney XD, “Mikey Murphy’s Law,” which will center on a distant descendant of the “Murphy’s Law” namesake — the guy who said that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. The show is slated to premiere on Disney XD in 2017.
Yes, there’s a whole lotta stuff to do before school starts this fall, but the first thing we need to do is say goodbye to Phineas, Ferb, Candace, Perry and all their friends. Or perhaps we should say, “See you in reruns!”
