ABC orders a new Muppets series to premiere this fall

ABC Television

Well, that was quick: Only a month after shooting a pilot, ABC has ordered a new Muppet show to series for this fall.

Here’s how the network describes the new, “more adult” Muppet show:

“The Muppets” return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that, for the first time ever, will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.

Bill Prady (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Bob Kushell (“Anger Management”) are co-writers and executive producers on the new show. Prady has a long history with the Muppets; he worked with creator Jim Henson in the 1980s and was nominated for an Emmy for his work on “The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson,” a tribute show that aired in 1990 after Henson’s death.

The pilot reportedly got a standing ovation when it screened for ABC executives, according to Entertainment Weekly.
