This year’s Expedition Everest Challenge will be the last
The Expedition Everest Challenge has run its course, Disney confirmed today. The 5K race has been run at Disney’s Animal Kingdom annually since 2008, but next month’s event will be the last.
The race is more of a fun run — it includes obstacles and ends with a scavenger hunt, and many participants wear costumes. The last Expedition Everest Challenge will take place at 10 p.m. on May 2. Registration is sold out.
There has been speculation for several months that this would be the last year for the event because there won’t be any room for a race after dark. Disney plans to add evening safaris, entertainment and the Rivers of Light “nighttime spectacular” on the Discovery River, which is expected to debut in early 2016. Plus, the new Avatar-themed land is expected to open in 2017, and early looks at the design hint that it could be a huge after-dark draw.
