Why wait times at Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will be longer for a while

Spring break crowds are in full force at Walt Disney World causing standby lines to jam up, but that’s not the only reason the wait times for Twilight Zone Tower of Terror have been routinely two hours for the recently.

Even though the attraction is open, it is undergoing refurbishment at the same time causing immediate longer lines that not only impact the Tower of Terror but other attractions inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

According to cast members, one of the tower elevator sides is undergoing refurbishment. This cuts the performance of the attraction in half, and at times can be so taxing on the system that the attraction will temporarily shut down during the day. A similar situation took place in 2019.

The attraction is made up of four ride vehicles that share two elevator shafts. At this point, the left elevator shaft is closed with two of the ride vehicles. There is no indication when the refurbishment will be complete and when one shaft has been refurbished, the other side will be closed. There is no indication by Disney as to why they did not just shut down the attraction for a full refurbishment, other than it would be a long closure and would be problematic with the Spring Break and summer crowd surges.

Closing half the attraction also means that the Lightning Lane availability is also smaller and longer Standby Lines. Because of this guests might decide to go to other attractions in its place, thus increasing the lines for those attractions as well.

There is no timeline when the refurbishments will be complete.
