The Hunchback of Notre Dame musical debuts in California and will head to New Jersey in 2015

The U.S. premiere of Disney’s musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at the La Jolla Playhouse in California takes place Oct. 26 and will be in the New York area next March.

The team behind the musical is composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz , book by Peter Parnell and is being directed by Scott Schwartz.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the only stage collaboration from two masters of the American musical theatre, composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. In this brand new production, a lush, emotionally rich score highlights the music’s orchestral power and choral beauty in an intimate retelling of the famous love story.

“I have always been intrigued by Victor Hugo’s story of love and aloneness, obsession and heroism. Now this extraordinary creative team retells this classic with a simple sophistication and an unspeakably gorgeous score that our audiences will love,” artistic director Christopher Ashley said on the La Jolla Playhouse website.

The production will remain in La Jolla until Dec. 14, 2014 and  is being produced in association with the Paper Mill Playhouse by special arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions.

For those on the East Coast, the production will head to the Paper Mill Playhouse in March 2015 before most  likely heading to Broadway. In the past Newsies appeared at the Paper Mill before heading to Broadway as well.
The cast includes Michel Arden as Quasimodo, Ciara Renee as Esmeralda, Andrew Samonsky at Phoebus, Erik Liberman as Clopin and Patrick Page as Frollo.
