‘Frozen’ heading for the stage, Disney CEO confirms

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed to Fortune this week that the hit movie “Frozen” will make it to stage — eventually.

Iger confirmed Disney is in discussions about development of the show, but there isn’t a timeline. “We’re not demanding speed,” he told Fortune. “We’re demanding excellence.”

Iger did not say “Broadway,” but the implication is clear.

“Frozen” follows in the huge footsteps of “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast,” both of which were Broadway hits for Disney. And this spring, the curtain goes up on “Aladdin.”

“Frozen” already has an impressive Broadway pedigree: Its songs were co-written by “Avenue Q” and “Book of Mormon” co-creator Robert Lopez and his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez. And, of course, Elsa is voiced by the incomparable Idina Menzel, a household name since her Tony-winning Broadway turn as Elphaba in “Wicked.”

It’s easy to imagine this translating to the stage:
