What is the story behind the dragon in New Fantasyland?

But, the area has been open for previews for over a month and there are photos and videos of the new attractions all over the blogosphere. So are there any more surprises left?

It looks like Disney is trying to throw one more our way. It could be in the form of a dragon. Since Nov. 14, Disney Social Media Managing Editor Gary Buchanan has been writing a Tumblr blog called “Disney Dragon.”

Throughout the blog are hints that dragon once protected New Fantasyland but was banished by a curse. But now, the dragon has been spotted and will one again protect the kingdom from the air. Filled throughout the blog are photos of dragon foot prints, videos reminiscent of “Cloverfield” and “The Blair Witch Project,” interviews with residents of New Fantasyland (see the video below) and even comments from an Anonymouse inside source (another video below) as to what’s going on.

Well, the dragon has been spotted by those outside of New Fantasyland, specifically in Bakersfield, California.

In June, The Bakersfield Californian reported the sighting of an ultralight craft over Shafter’s Minter Field that was a mechanical dragon. While airport officials were sworn to secrecy, restaurant manager Tammy Zaninovich snapped photos and posted them on Facebook. “It breathes fire and the mouth opens and closes,” she said, told the newspaper.

Disney never confirmed the sighting, only saying that people saw a project from based Walt Disney Imagineering.

So when will this dragon take flight over New Fantasyland? No one is saying and Disney has been mum. But was we get closer to the Dec. 6 opening of New Fantasyland, you can bet the dragon will soon be soaring again.
