When Mickey Mouse got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
When Mickey turned 50 in 1978, he again broke another barrier.
That year, he became the first fictional character to receive his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are now over 2,600 stars on the walk and of those 17 are for fictional characters or groups of characters. But Mickey was the first.
On Nov. 13, 1978, for his role in numerous animated films, Mickey was joined by Minnie to become the 1,700th star and first animated personality to have his name placed on the walk. His star is located at 6925 Hollywood Blvd.
The event kicked off the nationwide tour of Mickey’s 50th anniversary.
According to the official Hollywood Walk of Fame site: “Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character who has become an icon for the Walt Disney Company. Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and voiced by Walt Disney. The Walt Disney Company celebrates his birth as November 18, 1928 upon the release of Steamboat Willie, although Mickey had already appeared six months earlier in Plane Crazy. The anthropomorphic mouse has evolved from being simply a character in animated cartoons and comic strips to become one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Mickey is currently the main character in the Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney series “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”. Mickey is the leader of The Mickey Mouse Club.”
While Mickey was the first to join Walk of Fame, he was not the last of the Disney family to have a star on the walk. Eight of the 17 fictional characters are from Disney, including Minnie Mouse, who just received her star this past January.
