Torres is taking over the duties from Gary Sinise, who gave the briefing when the attraction originally opened in August of 2003.  Torres has appeared in numerous TV shows including Firefly (as Zoe Washburne), Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (as Nebula), Xena: Warrior Princess (as Cleopatra), Angel (as Jasmine), 24 (as Julia Miliken), Suits (as Jessica Pearson), The Shield (as Sadie Kavanaugh), and Westworld (as Lauren).

The Disney website has updated the attraction page with new information. The ride is being touted as Reluanched! Mission: Space.

The page explains that you can choose one of two journeys. You can decide “to feel the full force of an actual space launch and rocket to the Red Planet as part of the Orange Mission. Or you can opt for the brand-new—and less intense—orbit around Earth as part of the Green Mission.”

It goes on to explain that before “you board, actress Gina Torres will brief you as you prepare for your mission aboard the X-2 Deep Space Shuttle at the International Space Training Center (ISTC). Each member of your 4-cadet crew will assume an important role: navigator, pilot, commander or engineer. During your flight, cadets will be instructed to initiate a mission-critical sequence… so be prepared!”

The previous missions were similar, both going to Mars, the difference was that the Green Mission did not produce the G-forces.

The Orange Mission uses a centrifuge that spins and tilts to simulate the speed and G-forces of a spacecraft launch and reentry. The Green Mission is a motion simulator that doesn’t spin and offers light movement, according to Disney.

In the new version, the Orange Mission has been enhanced with HD video. The Green Mission is completely new and considered by Disney to be more family-friendly for the orbit around the earth. There had been complaints that Epcot was not family-friendly and this is one attempt to make it more inclusive, Disney executives have said in the past.
