When Disney gets in on a trend, it does it in a big way:
Last year, a woman made $5 million unboxing Disney toys on YouTube Next month, Disney is grabbing the idea and “plussing” it, hosting an 18-hour live, global unboxing event leading up to “Force Friday.”
Over 18 hours in 15 cities, online stars will unbox some of the new “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” products live on the Star Wars YouTube channel. So far, most of the products associated with the movie, which opens Dec. 18, have been closely guarded, so this will be the first look at most of the merchandise.
The live stream kicks off at 5:45 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 2, in Sydney, Australia. The live stream’s final hour — at 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 4 — will be webcast from Lucasfilm in San Francisco. Each of 15 locations will unbox one product inspired by the new movie.
At midnight local time, many retailers — including most Toys ‘R’ Us stores — will open their doors to Star Wars shoppers.
“Star Wars toys have always played an important role in how our fans interact with the Saga,” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a news release. “They’ve inspired multiple generations to relive the experience of the movies and to create new adventures all their own. These spectacular Star Wars: The Force Awakens products will continue that tradition.”
